How to train online to prepare for Medication Management Review accreditation
and expand your role and professional skills at a time that suits you

Increasing demand for medication reviews, as a paid government service, provides an opportunity for you to enhance your professional standing and build your business. Now preparatory training (Stage 1) is accessible wherever you are and at a time that suits you. The Medication Management Review Online Training course, developed by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, in association with Gold Cross Products and Services will prepare you well to achieve MMR accreditation.

What are Medication Management Reviews?back to the top

Medication Management Reviews (MMRs) include:

  • Residential Medication Management Reviews (RMMRs) – reviews are provided to residents of residential aged care facilities;
  • Home Medicines Reviews (HMRs) – reviews are provided to people living at home in the community.

HMRs are a consumer-focused, collaborative service involving a:

  • GP referral to the pharmacy of a patient’s choice;
  • pharmacist interview with the patient;
  • clinical assessment;
  • written report back to the GP. An accredited pharmacist must be involved in the clinical assessment and report stages of the review; and
  • Medication Management Plan by the GP agreed to by the patient and circulated to other members of the health care team.

How does the service benefit consumers?back to the top

HMRs are recommended for people:

  • who are confused or concerned about their medicines;
  • who don’t always remember to take their medicines;
  • who take more than five medicines a day; or
  • who have recently spent time in hospital.

By explaining why, when and how they should take their medicines, the pharmacist can help people understand and manage their health and reduce visits to a GP.

Many people report that the service makes them feel that they are receiving something ‘extra’ and reinforces their confidence in their health care providers.

MMRs help avoid medication-related problems and optimise medication use.

Why should you seek accreditation?back to the top

Becoming accredited puts you in the forefront to deliver and be remunerated for providing these important services. You will be increasingly in demand as the awareness of MMR services increases. Public knowledge of the service will reinforce awareness of pharmacists’ dedication to ongoing high levels of professional service and their involvement in primary health care.

How does the online training work?back to the top

The online MMR training course provides:

  • access to computer-based training sessions in your own home or pharmacy, in your own time;
  • improved knowledge and skills, through group interaction with peers, coordinated by an experienced, accredited pharmacist as the facilitator;
  • a clinically structured course, involving various case studies, with particular emphasis on geriatric pharmacotherapeutics;
  • access to course reference material online;
  • assistance in improving skills in communicating with consumers and other health professionals; and
  • a user-friendly internet-based process, involving varying degrees of interactivity.

The program uses case-based learning to help you identify any gaps in your knowledge. It will guide you and give you a framework in how to approach an MMR case and give you feedback plus the opportunity to review and discuss MMR issues with colleagues and course facilitators.

How will I proceed toward AACP accreditation?back to the top
